Chondroprotective Agents
Knee injections have been used for years to decrease
the pain associated with arthritis. One type
of injection, hyaluronate, is widely available and
FDA improved for the treatment of arthritis. This
injectable agent is not cortisone and it is not a
steroid based compound but is composed of a substance
present in healthy knees.
There are now five companies in the United States
that provide an injectable form of this substance,
a hyaluronate. Four of these compounds are
extracted from avian sources and the fifth, recently
introduced in the United States, is produced by a
fermentation process. All of these compounds have
been shown in research studies to reduce the symptoms
associated with arthritis.
These compounds are available now and are used frequently
for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knees. The
newest product is injected into the affected knee,
once a week for three consecutive weeks. The
injections take seconds and they are effective in
most individuals. See you orthopaedic surgeon for
more information on this treatment. | |
