Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery
Would you appreciate a more accurately performed
hip or knee replacement? Computers have been
developed that assist the surgeon in performing hip
and knee replacement surgery. The surgeon’s
hand actually performs the surgery, but the accuracy
of the bone cut is first checked and confirmed by
the computer!
This surgery is known as CAOS or computer assisted
orthopaedic surgery. The surgeon must be trained
in performing the surgery but the benefits of a more
accurately performed knee or hip replacement has
been documented. The downside is that the surgery
does take a little longer to perform and the procedure
requires sophisticated electronic equipment and an
operating room staff familiar with the procedure.
Many surgeons familiar with this technique
of performing surgery believe that it represents
the future of hip and knee replacement. More
information is available from your surgeon, Dr. Dysart.
